Science Experiment

Hi! This is a science experiment I have recently done!

Problem: Can you blow up a balloon chemically?

Research: "Vinegar is acetic acid. Baking Soda is sodium bicarbonate. Mixing the two is simply an acid base reaction."

It is not harmful to humans. We had to do some research because we needed to know if we were dealing with a poisonous gas when we combined the two.

Hypothesis: The balloon will get up to 9 inches long.

Materials:

- Ballooons

- Box of Baking Soda and Teaspoon

- Vinegar

- PVC Plastic Tube

- Measuring Cup

- Safety Goggles
Goggles

Steps:

1 - Gather your materials
2 - Put on your safety goggles
3 - Attach the balloon to the PVC Tube at the bottom
4 - Pour 4 teaspoons of Baking Soda in the PVC Tube
5 - Pour 5 ounces of vinegar into the PVC Tube, and cover the other opening
6 - Measure the length of the balloon

Tests and Results:

1 -  2 teaspoons of Baking Soda
      1/2 Cup of Vinegar

The balloon blew up about 6 1/2 inches long

2 -  1 teaspoon of Baking Soda
      2 ounces of Vinegar

The balloon blew up about 4 1/2 inches long

3 -   3 1/2 teaspoons of Baking Soda
        4 ounces of Vinegar

The balloon blew up about 7 1/2 inches long

Variable: The amount of Baking Soda and Vinegar

Control: The PVC tube and the balloon

My results didn't support my hypothesis. In the experiment, the balloon blew up because of a gas.
An unexpected thing happened: My hand went over the top of the tube, but I was too slow and it started to bubble out like a bullet!
